City of Brussels on Foursquare

The City of Brussels wants to be a pioneer in the digital innovation at the service of its citizens. That's why on the initiative of Karine Lalieux, the Alderwoman of ICT, the City just created its page on Foursquare, the social network of geolocation. It is the first official page on this social network managed by a municipal administration in Belgium.

What is Foursquare? If Facebook says "what I like and what I do" and Twitter expresses "what I think", then Foursquare is the equivalent of "where I am". In this way, Foursquare indicates the interesting places nearby and those visited by your friends. It looks like a "Social City Guide": a little guide co-created by the users, with their recommendations.

The City of Brussels is henceforth "an owner" of 70 pages listed on Foursquare about the buildings of the City (museums, libraries, municipal buildings). By its status, the City ensures the reliability of the information on Foursquare. "The objective of this step is to ensure a quality information and an update of the information on this social network. On Foursquare, the users can advise certain places and create them if they don’t exist yet. By managing the pages of buildings connected to the City of Brussels, we watch over the fact that this information is reliable, thus avoiding disappointment of the visitors", says Karine Lalieux, Alderwoman of ICT at the City of Brussels.

GCD deeply saddened by the passing of a true networker

The GCD has just been informed of Diogo's passing, a true networker, an outstanding entrepreneur dedicated to social innovation and ICT, a man GCD had many occasions to work with in the framework of international cooperation and projects. As the founding Chairman of the Social Innovation eXchange and the Dialogue Café, he helped build a global community of social innovators, using technology to bring people together and let them share ideas.

We feel deeply sad. Our sincere thoughts and condoleances go to his family and friends in these difficult times.

Cologne due to sign a twinning agreement with Rio de Janeiro

The city of Cologne (Germany) and the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) are about to become twin cities. Cologne Mayor Jürgen Roters is expected to sign a twinning agreement with Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo da Costa Paes in September 2011 in the framework of the German-Brazilian business days. Both cities are willing to cooperate in various areas such as Technology, Environment, Innovation and Culture. This twinning will also be an opportunity for GCD to reinforce existing ties with the city of Rio de Janeiro, for instance with the team of the Secretary of Sciences and Technologies, Franklin Dias Coelho, and create new synergies with city officials in charge of relevant issues for GCD.

Additional information on the twinning agreement is available in German.

Congratulations and all the best to both cities for their promising common endeavours.
