A French weblog on eDemocracy, Alban, has just published an interesting article on the very active mayor of Jun, member of the Global Cities Dialogue since many years. Jun is a small city in the Grenada Region in Spain.

In the last 10 years, this municipality has shown great example of e-democracy. Here are a few facts about digital experience in this municipality of Sierra Nevada:

1. Two years after the elections of Mayor Jose Antonio Rodriguez Salas in June 2001, the City Hall implemented a new technology called PoliciaNet. It allows citizens to warn the municipal police by mail or by SMS, about garbage dump or parking problems that City Hall committs to resolve within 24 hours.

2. The municipality put into service an e-signature system, which guarantee total confidentiality, as it happened during the national elections in 2004. Citizens can vote online or by their mobile phone. More than 600 on 3500 citizens choose this method.

3. The city of Jun has more than 80 self-service computers today. Citizens can take a look at all decisions taken by the city council. Moreover they have a new habit to discuss with the elected representative. All petition deposited online must be answered within 24 hours.

4. Every citizen can subscribe for an alarm system by sms. The level goes from 1, which is for natural disasters, to 5, which is for the latest news about career in the region.

5. About 3500 citizens’ medical file folder in Jun have been scanned and e-medical prescription are more and more used. As a result, the attendance of the care center felt by 40% because patients don’t need to visit the doctor anymore in order to renew their medical prescription.
